I had the great fortune a few weeks ago of studying with a man named Jeffrey Yuen-a master healer and 88th generation Daoist priest of the Jade Purity School lineage. I have been receiving his knowledge through my mentor over the past 2-½ years. This was the first opportunity I had to actually sit with him and get the direct transmission from the source.
One of the most powerful takeaways from a full day of instruction was this: Healing is a negotiation. This means that you must give up something in order to gain something. You must let go of what is not working anymore in order to recreate health.
What might this something be? It could be anything and only you know what needs to go. It could be the belief that you don’t have enough time to exercise, it could be a grudge you are still holding against an ex, it could be the habit of drinking a couple of cocktails every night, it could be that secret thing that you do that you don’t mention to anyone.
Healing is a dialogue between you, your ego and your highest self. What am I going to put in my body today? What kind of people will I surround myself with? What kind of environments am I willingly putting myself in? How will I treat myself when I feel anxious, angry or insecure?
The first question you must ask yourself when you are seeking healing is “Am I ready to change?” The same consciousness that produces disease cannot be the same consciousness that heals it. Something has to shift in order for healing to take place. This requires willingness and flexibility of the mind.
When something isn’t functioning properly in your body, mind or spirit, it will signal you. The signal will usually start as a whisper, something that doesn’t feel that serious. Sometimes it’s jolt-a surprise scary test result.
Either way, this is where your investigation begins. The bigger the smoke signals your body is sending you, the deeper you need to go down the rabbit hole. Many usually start with the big picture-the MRI’s, the blood work, the physical exams.
We work our way down through the physical layers until we run out of flesh to examine. Then comes the interesting stuff if we are open to it. Why did your body choose your left hip or your uterus or your low back to be the problem? What does it mean that pain or dysfunction is hiding out in those places?
Or maybe we begin with the emotions and see why we are stuck in one particular expression. I look at the acupuncture channels that criss cross the places that aren’t giving you what you want. We free things up and direct energy where it has gone missing.
At every turn, the question needs to be asked again and again. What are you willing to give up in order to heal? Are you willing to prioritize yourself? Is your commitment to your happiness and health greater than your commitment to pain and frustration?
Take a minute to identify a couple of things in your life that no longer serve you. These could be anything from participating in toxic relationships, repeated mental self-flagellation, going to bed too late, or being addicted to sugar. Imagine if you were to let go of just one thing (just one!) that was hurting you.
You truly have everything you need inside you right now to make a choice to stop doing something that’s harming you. I have absolute 100% faith that you could be reading this right now and decide to stop. Just like that.
And then what happens? You create this lovely clean open space that is ripe for gain. It’s ripe for healing. It’s like a tiny plot of fresh, fertile soil just waiting for new seeds to be planted.
Fill it up with whatever your heart needs most.
